Professional Development
FEED THE GREEN BIN comes to Clarksville Middle School.
Clarksville Middle school is the first middle school in Howard County to sort food waste, recycling, and trash in an effort to reduce the amount of trash that needs to be landfilled.
Tuesday, February 20, 2015, Principal Melissa Shindel, teachers Phil Herdman, Laura Puryear, and Sandy Vinje, and custodian Tyrone Williams traveled to Pointers Run Elementary School to see first hand how the food scrapping program will work. Alicia Moore from Howard County Recycling, as well as Olivia Claus, Custodial Supervisor, trained the Clarksville staff about how the project is run. We learned that Pointers Run has food scrapped over 8,000 pounds of food scrap since the beginning of the school year and have cut back on one dumpster load of trash each week. They now have a 75% recycling rate. Our staff is now up to the challenge of bringing the program to our school.
Thursday, February 5, 2015
Alicia Moore presented and trained all CMS staff on the new food scrap sorting program. Each administrator, grade level team, related arts team, kitchen and custodial staff attended on of the four training sessions this day. An example of the poster and a presentation of the color coded sorting cans were presented. Staff then was given the opportunity to show what they had learned by sorting a typical lunch into the appropriate bins.

Presented in each grade level pod, students were trained on the process of sorting as well as understanding the composting process. She showed pictures of the facility at Alpha Ridge landfill for composting and students discovered the importance of composting rather than landfilling.
