Best Management Practices
Energy Conservation
Teams of our highly trained students have been working on bi-daily tips for energy and water conservation,
and the videos also educated the students more on phantom (vampire) energy. These tips are shown every
other day or so on the morning announcements, CMSTV25. On the morning announcements, CMSTV25, the
anchors remind teachers to "Please Turn Off Your TVs," after announcements.
A team of students in Mrs. Vinje's GT Science class have researched the effect of light on concentration in
class. Their studies have concluded that many classrooms have too much light, to the point where the light
rays reflect off the pages in books. Student researchers removed a percentage of light bulbs in order to both
reduce energy use and brightness of the room. Light switches have been reconfigured to turn on only a certain
number of lights.
10 teachers at CMS have won desk lamps to use when the room lights are not needed. All teachers
received power strips to use with the large number of appliances in classrooms. They can all be turned off all at
once.

Waste Reduction
Recycling Bins
All classrooms and the offices will have recycling bins used every day. Returned older recycling bins placed in all Clarksville Midde school classrooms. We are reusing the old bins. Mrs. Hess, parent of a 7th grade student, connected us with Karen Haskins at Howard County Government, who collected and delivered the old bins to CMS. January 15, 2011.
Requesting Recycling Bins
Teachers requesting and using recycling bins donated to CMS by families.

Water Conservation/Pollution Prevention
Landscaping Behind 6th Grade Wing
Master Gardeners came and evaluated the water runoff around the school. Suggestions were made for improvement of gutters, downspouts, drainage.
Fixed the landscaping around our building after renovation. Spring 2011 - land around the East Wing was regraded to improve water infiltration and runoff. Planting native species plants to stop erosion and increase infiltration of water. Downspouts were replaced. Water rerouted to help eliminate flooding around the building.
Teachers & Principal met with county. Discussed importance of grading soil and providing proper drainage for downspouts on east wing of building.
April 16 - April 27, 2011 land was regraded, seeded, mulched. Down spouts were connected to viable storm water drainage system.

20-Minute Clean-Up
List of noteworthy participants of the How. Co. 20 Minute Clean-Up
2011 - Sixth Graders participated in the 2011 20 minute cleanup in Howard County. Two-hundred-fifteen sixth graders spent 20 minutes each, over a period of two days, to clean up the Clarksville Middle School campus. The students collected over 15 bags of litter. Eight of those bags were recycled, the rest placed in the trash.
